The Shelter

The shelter is intended for everyone – both adults and children – when staying at home is frightening due to domestic or intimate partner violence or the threat thereof. You can come to the shelter alone or with your children at any time of the day, regardless of your municipality of residence. Staying at a shelter is free of charge.
A shelter is a home-like place that offers round-the-clock security and help with practical matters. Each client or family who comes to the shelter has their own room at their disposal. The shelter offers the opportunity to deal with violence in a safe environment together with professional staff. If necessary, it is possible to use an interpreter.
Don’t be left alone
You can call the shelter at any time and discuss the situation and applying to the shelter together with the staff. The shelter is happy to help you with any questions.
When coming to the shelter, it is a good idea to have the following with you:
- Your own and your children’s essential personal belongings
- Necessary medications

Pets and shelter
Violence or threats of violence can also be directed at the pet of a person experiencing domestic violence. People do not necessarily want to leave a pet at home if there is a threat that a pet that has stayed at home will be treated badly.
Pets cannot be brought to the Jyväskylä shelter. However, the shelter staff can investigate the possibility of the association’s volunteer pet sitters taking the pet into care for the duration of the shelter period. There are also shelters in Finland where you can take a pet with you. More information is available from the shelter staff.
